Songs and singers I like

MOVIES:
Hidden Figures
This movie centers on three brilliant African-American women (referred to as “human computers”) working at NASA in the 1960s. The three leads are Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae (who is also a singer). They are joined by Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Kristen Dunst, and Mahershala Ali (House of Cards; Luke Cage). Before Col. John Glenn (up-and-coming actor Glen Powell) went into space, Henson’s character (Katharine Johnson) had to “check the math” behind the mission. I learned that Johnson is still alive in small-town Virginia- wow! Check out the trailer below.
Lion
Critics have raved re: Dev Patel in this film, as well as the boy who plays Indian adoptee to Australia (Saroo Brierley) as a child. In case you’re NOT a big fan yet of the British-Indian actor, know that Patel is transformed for this role (hair, body, and accent). I’ll be seeing it next weekend.
See the trailer below; the cast includes Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, and David Wenham.
Singin’ in the Rain (in select theaters: SUN, 1/15 & WED, 1/18)
TCM and Fathom Events is co-presenting this musical at select theaters for two days ONLY. This movie premiered 65 years ago (1952) and stars Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds (who recently passed away at age 84), and Donald O’Conner. I heard about it on TCM, then checked online for details (see link below).

One of the most famed/respected dancers/choreographers of her time, Cyd Charisse, has a supporting role. Checking IMDB, I found that Rita Moreno is part of the ensemble (VERY cool). I’ve never seen this film before, but it’s available on YouTube for ONLY $2.99!
The Salesman (AFI Silver Theatre: SUN, 1/22 at 5:15PM)
This film is part of the 21st Annual Iranian American Film Festival which was previously held at the Freer Gallery (now undergoing renovations). It is directed by Asghar Farhadi (A Separation), who is NOT afraid to realistically tackle subjects which are still taboo in his native Iran. While A Separation was about impending divorce, this film deals w/ the assault of a young wife and her husband’s subsequent emotional turmoil and drive for revenge. I got my ticket already.

PLAYS:
As You Like It: Folger Shakespeare Theatre (Pay-What-You-Will: TUES, 1/24 at 7:30PM)
This adaptation of The Bard’s comedy will run from JAN 24th – MAR 5th starring actors from Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. I’m interested in this b/c I’ve only seen one movie re: this play. I haven’t read the play (it’s rarely taught/studied in schools/universities).

Caroline, or Change: Round House Theatre (UPDATED: Pay-What-You-Can on THURS, 1/26 at 7:30PM & WED, 2/1 at 7:30PM)
This is a musical written (book and lyrics) by the renowned Tony Kushner; it contains aspects from his own life as a boy growing up in the South. The play centers on Caroline, an African-America maid for the Gellmans, a Jewish family in 1960s Louisiana. It combines different types of music: spirituals (gospel), blues, Motown, classical, and Jewish klezmer and folk.

This rom com (based on the memoir of the same title by Chetan Bhagat) came out in Spring 2014; I saw it two weeks back. This is a fun, yet realistic film, that’s NOT only concerned w/ two MBA students falling in love, BUT what comes after (getting to know each other’s families and the drama that ensues). To add a twist usually NOT seen in mainstream Indian films- Ananya (Alia Bhatt) is from the South; Krish (Arjun Kapoor) hails from the North.
So, what’s the biggie here- they’re BOTH Hindu, right? Yes, WE American desis MAY feel that way! BUT their families who speak different languages and follow different customs, along w/ ALL the typical baggage (which you’d see in a film like Meet the Parents).

When they first meet in grad school, Ananya is annoyed that there is no beer at the local café. Krish explains: “Gujarat is a dry state.” He gets interested in her first, BUT thinks she’s “out of my league.” Krish offers to help Ananya w/ Economics (which is her weak subject). Their friendship quickly grows into love after he declares one night that he doesn’t ONLY want to be her buddy.

There are only a FEW songs in this film (which are quite good); you can get them from iTunes. The music blends pretty well into the actions/emotions. The students/dancers in the background actually look like real/average people, NOT models. The run time could’ve been shorter. I recommend it for ALL of you who wouldn’t usually give Bollywood a chance!
All the Way (now showing on HBO)

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad; Malcolm in the Middle) TOTALLY transformed himself into LBJ- vocally and physically! It was also a treat to see Melissa Leo (who plays Lady Bird) after a LONG time; I’ve been a fan of hers since her days on Homicide: Life on the Street. I saw the play (Arena stage production) about 2 mos. ago; the film is V true to that, though there are changes made (as you can do more w/ cinema). Anthony Mackie (who has NOT aged by much) has a meaty role as MLK, Jr. Wingnuts (fans of The West Wing) will be happy to see Bradley Whitford (who portrays liberal Democratic senator- Hubert Humphrey).
The Man Who Knew Infinity (now in select theaters)

I went to go to a free screening about 3 wks ago; I had no expectations. Well, I really liked it- and NOT just b/c of Jeremy Irons, the music, or cinematography! Toby Jones (who often plays baddies) is just SO sweet/delightful as G. H. Hardy’s (Irons’) BFF/fellow mathematician. Jeremy Northam has a side role as charming philospher Bertrand Russell; it was a nice surprise to me. This is in the time just before WWI- that conflict also affects the lives of the Oxford community.

British-Indian actor, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionnaire; The Newsroom), does a FINE job as S. Ramanujan, a devout Brahmin Hindu math whiz who went from Southern India to Oxford U. at the age of 26. Patel, who is still in his 20s, has a penchant for wide-eyed/innocent/eager characters; it works well here. Ramanujan left behind his strong-willed widowed mother and lovely new wife, Janaki (Indian-American actress Devika Bhise). It’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen a modern/Western young woman portray a traditional/demure Indian housewife in SUCH a convincing manner!
The Taming of the Shrew (STC: MAY 17-JUNE 26)

I just saw this last SAT (preview matinee) w/ a gal pal (who luckily got free tickets online)- it was FABULOUS! This production, directed by Chinese-Indonesian Brit, Ed Sylvanus Iskander, has a beautiful/intricate set and songs (by Duncan Sheik) which are performed by characters (who were NOT given monologues in Shakespeare’s original play).
Yes, ALL the actors are male, BUT diversity is built into the show! Indian- American actor Maulik Pancholy (Weeds) plays Kate, Sri Lankan-American veteran actor Bernard White (Silicon Valley) plays Baptista and Dutch/Mexican-Brit, Peter Gadiot (Tut), plays Petruchio. Chinese-American actor, Telly Leung, has the best singing voice in the cast; he recently appeared as one of the leads in Allegiance (opposite George Takei).

NOT many young ppl are into Blues music these days! Zach already a F/T musician considers his style to be a mix of “blues, rock, and alternative.”
John Wayne Schulz
One of the MAIN reasons I watch this show is the possibility of finding a good country singer. This one is a REAL cowboy (not unlike George Strait)- V cool! He grew up on his (tight-knit) family’s ranch in TX, then joined the Marines (current job: flight instructor).

John Wayne MAY look familiar to long-time Idol fans; he lost to Scotty McCreery in Season 10. Those who have seen him perform in person seem to be quite impressed by his natural abilities.
Sonika Vaid
Yeah, there are 2 desi (South Asian) gals on this season! Her voice sounds V pure (as Harry said). Rhea Raj, the other desi gal, has songs up on iTunes (ALL written by herself). Rhea also has videos posted (https://www.youtube.com/user/rhearajmusic). Like Rhea, Sonika has been singing (and playing the piano) for MANY years (https://www.youtube.com/user/SONIKAVAID101/videos).
