Actor Jamie Bamber ("Battlestar Galactica")
Actor Jamie Bamber ("Battlestar Galactica")
I have only watched a FEW eps of BSG (after my friend Sadia told me about the story- thanks!), but already think it’s AWESOME!!!
Very casual (and cute)!
Very casual (and cute)!
Jamie’s dad is American and his mom is North Irish; he grew up in England.  Jamie is not ONLY a hottie- he went to Cambridge Univ.  Though Apollo on BSG speaks w/ an American accent, Jamie would’ve preferred NOT to speak like that.  He colored his hair black to look more like Edward James Olmos (his BSG dad) when the show began.

More blonde & young in "Horatio Hornblower"
More blonde & young in "Horatio Hornblower"
Jamie is close friends w/ Welsh actor (and fellow hottie!) Ioan Gruffudd who played the title character in the UK TV series Horatio Hornblower.  Jamie’s 3 little girls are all blonde (like him).  There’s an adorable pic of his fam on the net!  You may also have seen him in Daniel Deronda starring Hugh Dancy; he played a young artist w/ quirky facial hair.

jamie-bamber_casual1

Now that “BSG” is finished, Jamie can be seem in the UK version of Law & Order.  He plays a detective superintendant (DS) on the show.

A desi “American Idol”… and more!!!

This guy just made me smile!
Anoop is the anti-Sanjaya... Thank goodness!!!
Anoop is the anti-Sanjaya... Thank goodness!!!
I started to watch AI after a LOOOONG time b/c my aunt pointed Anoop out to me 2 wks ago.  (She has 2 young daughters, so she tries to check out what they like when she can.)  I’m REALLY excited that there could be a (good) desi idol in the near future!  As for Sanjaya Malakar- he has a book out now!  I did a double-take when I saw it recently at Borders.
Awww... I LOVE a big smile!
Awww... I LOVE a big smile!

Like many desis, Anoop is a multi-talented, but humble individual.  He’s  22, graduated w/ BA from UNC Chapel Hill (he won a scholarship), and is currently enrolled there in a master’s program in Anthropology.  He likes R&B music the best, and feels part of Southern culture (he referred to himself as “a Carolina boy”).

Yes, Anoop is a TALL desi guy!
Yes, Anoop is a TALL desi guy!

In this week’s ep, Randy Travis was (noticebly) impressed w/ Noop Dogg.  Though Anoop admitted to not knowing much re: country music, he did VERY well.  He sang Willie Nelson’s classic song.

Singing at UNC Chapel Hill
Singing at UNC Chapel Hill (w/ The Clef Tones)

Anoop was in an acapella group at his uni; he was usually the soloist of the group (The Clef Tones).  You can check out some old vids of the grp on You Tube.

Anoop's parents are both scientists in "The Research Triangle."
Anoop's parents are both scientists in "The Research Triangle."
Anoop’s parents were in the audience before; they support his dream of being a singer.  Wow, talk about COOL desis!

Other American Idol contestants I like:

Lil Rounds from Memhis, TN
Lil Rounds from Memphis, TN
She's pretty and has a POWERFUL voice!
She's pretty and has a POWERFUL voice!

I think she has a GREAT chance of winning the competition!  Great voice (w/ power), sweet/humble personality, and “girl-next-door” looks ALL go in her favor.

Matt Giraud from Kalamazoo, MI
Matt Giraud from Kalamazoo, MI

This guy seems very confidant and sweet.  He’s from suburban Michigan, and has a cool, husky kind of voice.

Matt, who also plays piano, released CDs (independantly) before!

Can’t wait to hear more from ALL these new young singers!

Awe & Ardor (TV’s Top Cops)

Vincent D’Onofrio (Det. Bobby Goren, Law & Order: Criminal Intent)

v21

The good actors that I’ve met – I’ve met some of the best actors that we’ll ever see – and I know for sure the one thing that we all have in common when we all look in each other’s eyes, is that we’re all struggling to achieve 100%. That’s all I see when I see another artist. All of us are trying to achieve 100% in our work. That’s all we struggle to do. We never do, but we never stop trying until the day we die. It’s that struggle to achieve 100%, that’s where our performance lies, that’s what the audience gets. They get the struggle.

The last 2 seasons were FULL of Goren-related drama on L&O: CI (currently shown on the USA network).  Bobby lost his fragile, schizophrenic mother (played by the fabulous Rita Moreno) and learned that his biological father Mark Ford Brady (Roy Scheider) was a serial killer.  Then his older/former junkie brother Frank (Tony Goldwyn) was found murdered- pushed out of his apt. window.  He made some uncharacteristic decisions, and took a BIG risk to help Frank’s son- his new-found nephew.   Wow, that’s a LOT to take in!  Bobby had to leave the job for a while, too.

NUP_102061_0883

Bobby is NOT your typical cop (unlike Eames)- he’s a criminal profiler with a genius IQ.  He can get into a perp’s mind; he’s very much concerned with the “why” of a crime.

Goren is based on Sherlock Holmes but, instead of relying upon physical evidence like Holmes, D’Onofrio’s character focuses on psychology to identify the perpetrators, whom he often draws into confessing or yielding condemning evidence.  –IMDB

v4

D’Onofrio (seen above in The Whole Wide World co-starring Renee Zellweger) has taken on MANY quirky roles over the years.  He’s known in the industry as an “actor’s actor.”  With Det. Goren, character is revealed bit by bit.  Bobby is not a “people-person,” so he keeps a LOT to himself.  But he’s not ALWAYS in control.  Because of his unstable childhood (including an often absent/distant father), Goren has learned to be self-sufficient.

DWF15-506193

What a CUTE nose!  The towering 6’3″ D’Onofrio (seen above at a 1996 movie premiere) is an interesting actor to watch b/c he pushes himself to become a character.  Sometimes it may be TOO much- several years ago on the L&O: CI set, he was hospitalized for exhaustion.  D’Onofrio is a “method” actor.  (He gained weight for a movie re: Orson Welles.)  Zellweger thanked him in her Oscar speech- how cool is that!?

Did you know?: D’Onofrio was born in Brooklyn, so he’s a REAL New Yorker!

Chris Meloni (Det. Elliot Stabler, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)

meloni2

A city like New York has clashing cultures and clashing ideas and big ideas, but these sorts of things weren’t being thrown in the air and bandied about where I came from.

Meloni has played a great cop (Stabler) AND a great criminal (Keller on Oz).  Both characters are intimidating, unpredictable, an have a strong physical presence.  Come on- that’s an AWESOME bod!

meloni3

When it’s mid-February, and it’s bitterly cold outside, I am really glad that I’m not working in construction anymore.

The above pic is from Oz, where Meloni played a sociopathic killer.   Unlike the manipulative Keller, El (as partner Olivia Benson calls him) has a VERY strong sense of right and wrong.  I’ve been watching SVU since it started!  I missed a FEW eps here and there, BUT am catching up.

meloni11

Elliot is especially affected by cases involving children/teens; he has gone through trials w/ his family as a result of his tough job.  He is a very loyal partner to Liv.  Meloni is an actor that you can’t pidgeon-hole into “good” or “bad” character; he’s in the gray area.  This makes him fun to watch!

Did you know?: Meloni is half-Italian and half-French Canadian.  He’s often mistaken for (another fine actor) Elias Koteas.

Chris Noth (Det. Mike Logan, Law & Order / Law & Order: Criminal Intent)

c3

The original L&O series has had MANY strong actors: Michael Moriarty, Jerry Orbach, and Sam Waterston to name a few.  But who looks and acts like a real-life cop?  It’s Chris Noth; he’s played Det. Mike Logan on 2 L&O shows.

c4

Wow, what a great profile!  I liked the longer hair, too.  Through the years, Mike has slowly matured and softened (somewhat) as a person and as a cop.  But, he’s still got a petulant/abrasive side.  Mike has worked w/ many partners, but will be leaving the L&O: CI soon.  (Jeff Goldblum will take over in the coming season.)

c51

I don’t know the politics of Hollywood. Am I hungry for great material? Every actor is. How I can get to it, that’s another story.

Noth achieved even greater success/notice when he got the role of “Mr. Big” on SATC (above pic).  Hmmm… I wonder what Big would think of Logan’s wardrobe?  Noth and Sara Jessica Parker had GREAT chemisty together!

Did you know?: Noth, unlike Logan who’s Irish American, is Jewish.

Must See TV!!!

Masterpiece Theater: Tess of the D’Urbervilles (JAN 4th & 11th / PBS; check for re-runs, too!)

So beautiful and so sad. Beautiful in the characters, wonderfully realised for the time. Tess especially, a child to whom things happen, things beyond her understanding or control, and who is swept along by the tide of events bewildered, but still strong and true herself and her morals – yes, even at the end.

-IMDB review

Some of you may have studied Thomas Hardy novels (AP English/colllege/etc.).  Maybe your parents liked Julie Christie in Far From The Maddening Crowd?

julie_far

As a teen, Hardy came across as quite “modern”, b/c he writes about lower/middle-class protagonists (who often think/dream “outside the box.”)   They are Brits of the late 1800s who live/work in the country; Hardy appreciates these average people (Gabriel, the shepherd in Far From the Maddening Crowd, is the main romantic hero).

madding31

Thomas Hardy also knows how to create love triangles (usually VERY odd)!   Love at first sight, terrible tragedies, and the search for self-knowledge are some of his themes.  He goes into “dark” areas of life; many younger students thought he was TOO “doom and gloom” (remember the events surrounding Jude and Sue’s children at end of Jude the Obscure?)  His heroes are not stock character types, but young gals/guys looking to learn and get a (little) ahead of where they were born into.

Tess Derbyfield is an unsually pretty, innocent, 16 y.o. country girl who dreams of being a teacher.  (In the Polanski version, Nastassja Kinski played Tess, so you know she’s supposed to be country-fabulous!)

nk_tess

Tess is simple, hard-working, but with great pride/dignity.  Her dad, a seller of agricultural materials, is often out of work and/or drunk.  This is a great embarrassment to her, though her mom and younger sibs don’t take much offense.  One day, the father discovers that they have some rich relations who hold the same ancient family name of D’Urberville.  Mother is overjoyed, suggesting that Tess go to their estate to ask for help (a job per chance?)  She doesn’t want to go, but sees no other choice.  Maybe she can save up for studies?

gemma_tess

When Tess arrives at the cousins’ house, she meets Alec- a clever, smooth-talking, calculating young man.  Right away, he gives her the job as “poultry manager”; this causes raised eyebrows/jealousy among the other staff.  He also starts to work on breaking down her defenses- attention, compliments, gifts.   (The image I got was a wolf ensnaring a lamb.)  There is a memorable incident involving fresh, bright-red strawberries (both in the book and mini-series).  Alec’s elderly, frail mother doesn’t seem to notice what’s going on…

Tess is in a very dangerous position- she has no male protector, and must rely solely on her own instincts!

tess_horse

Watch out girl- he’s no white knight!

Emma’s HOT List

I have created my own list of hotties.  (Warning: Some are SUPER-HOT!)  Some are rising stars, while others  have been making their mark in TV/film/etc., for years.  Not only are these gents good-looking, they’re good actors!

Aaron Eckhart

M~ PEOPLE ECKHART

He’s not just Two Face, but an actor of MANY faces and facets.  Aaron grew up in Cali,  was raised Mormon, and attended BYU (where he met director and close pal, Neil LaBute.)  They both come from a similar background, and have collaborated often.  LaBute operates outside the mainstream, working on topics he likes.   Aaron is  unafraid to take on unusual projects; he’s gained lbs. and changed his hair/looks for many roles.

ae_possession

This is a screen shot from Possession (one of my fave films of ALL time!)   In it Aaron plays an underappreciated American researcher (post-PhD) in London who happens upon a JUICY secret (at least in the field of Romantic poetry).  He joins up w/ an icy Brit Womens Studies prof (Paltrow) to get more info…   Too bad no REAL poetry experts look like him- LOL!!!

ae_gapae_bw1

I smile a lot in public because I tend to look too serious.
Adrian Lester

adrian-lester_bw

Wow, check out those EYES!!!  Like many performers of the “old days”, Adrian Lester can sing, dance, AND act onstage and onscreen.  He’s a BIG talent (physically, too- he’s around 6’4″) who has a rather soft voice.

adrian-lester_sml

After I saw him in Primary Colors, I wondered why he wasn’t in more (big) films.  Fans of the bard can check him out in Branagh’s musical film Love’s Labour Lost and As You Like It.   His smile is VERY sweet!

Chiwetel Ejiofor

HP Portrait Studio

With a (Nigerian) name like that- you’re gonna have a nickname (Chewy)!  This young actor (under 35) can pretty much play ANY part, as the song goes.  He’s done Shakespeare (screen/satge), played a transvestite (Kinky Boots), and acted opposite Denzel (Inside Man / American Ganster)!

chewy_dpt1

He made a HUGE impression w/ Dirty Pretty Things, a smart, sensitive view of immigrant, working-class London.  He played a Nigerian immigrant (and former doc) who worked days driving a cab and nights at a hotel.  Chewy based this character partly on his OWN immigrant father (who was a real-life doc).  Unfortunately, he lost his father in a car accident when he was 11 y.o.  The scars on his forehead are a reminder of that.

chewy_red1

He disappears into roles like few other actors can, which makes him valuable to any film, but it also makes it difficult for him to become a star.

I enjoy every role that I’ve seen him perform. His acting seems effortless and his interaction with colleagues is a beautifully timed dance.

A superb artist and I believe he will win that Oscar one day. A magnificent actor!

-Fan comments from IMDB

Christian Bale

cb_goatee

Welsh-born Bale has appeared in Shakespeare, dramas and comedies demonstrating a versatility, depth and range that has made him one of the best reviewed actors today and one of the most popular actors on the Internet.

-IMDB

Though born in Wales, he calls himself British (as he didn’t grow up in Wales).  Christian grew up onscreen; his 1st movie role was at age 14 in Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun.  He trained for 10 weeks in dancing and martial arts for the dance sequences in Newsies (1992) and Swing Kids (1993).

cb_lilwomen

Since it’s holiday season, check out Little Women w/ Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, and Kristen Dunst.

An actor should never be larger than the film he’s in.

Spin magazine, March 1996
I only sound intelligent when there’s a good scriptwriter around.

cb_young

In American Psycho, Christian tackles a very, very EVIL businessman consumed w/ his own desires.

It’s the actors who are prepared to make fools of themselves who are usually the ones who come to mean something to the audience.

cb_smile

I don’t think I was particularly in need of superheroes. I never had any fascination with Superman or Spider-Man or a Batman kind of character. If it happened at all, it was imagined characters that I had invented. My dad was a role model for me. He was a fascinating man. There was intrigue and entertainment growing up with him. He gave me an edict that I still pursue: Life should never be boring.
Denzel Washington

dw_lg

Man gives you the award, but God gives you the reward.
To keep him out of trouble, Denzel’s parents sent him to The Boys and Girls Club; he’s now one of their spokespeople.  A couple of weeks ago, I saw Denzel’s first film, a comedy called Carbon Copy (opposite George Segal).  Not only did he look in FAB shape, he was confident and easy with the lines, actions, etc.  When Denzel is attached to a film, people all over the world take notice.  Some guys just have the “it” factor!

dw_tux

Did you know one of Denzel’s twins, Katia, is now at Yale university?

On Oprah, Julia Roberts commented that “working with Denzel (on The Pelican Brief) was like working with The Beatles.”  Dir. Ed Zwick uses a lot of close-ups on him, because “even when he’s not saying anything, the audience is looking at him.”  His wife in Crimson Tide, Vanessa Bell-Calloway, told People that “Denzel has wit, style, and intelligence.”  But the coolest thing about this big Hollywood success is that he’s willing to help young actors!
Dylan McDermott

dm2_lg

My theory about actors is we’re all walking milk cartons.  Expirations dates everywhere.

After a very troubled childhood/family life, Dylan and his lil sis were adopted by his step-mom (actress/writer/feminist icon Eve Ensler).  She encouraged him to go to acting school and Fordham.   She also turned his life around.   He had become a hard drinker and was constantly in fights. At age 23, he quit drinking.  He also changed his name from Mark to Dylan in tribute to Eve.

dm1

This is a shot from The Mistress of Spices– a terrible film I suffered through just to see Dylan.  In order to NOT alienate her Bollywood fans, Aishwarya Rai DID NOT kiss Dylan on the lips in Gurinder Chadha’s rom com film.  Boy, talk about missed opportunity!

Hugh Dancy

hd_car1

In Elizabeth I, a great UK miniseries I previously wrote about, Hugh goes toe-to-toe w/ Jeremy Irons and Helen Mirren.  Not bad for a guy just who’s just 33!

hd_deronda1

hd_deronda2

Who better to rescue a damsel in distress?  LOL… Daniel Deronda is about a young man- sensitive, caring, and highly intelligent, but haunted by doubts about his identity.  Is he a British gentleman like his adopted father?  And why is he drawn to the Jewish faith?

hd_hair

Hugh is not just a pretty face; he graduated from Oxford University with a degree in English Literature & Language and speaks French fluently.

My dad is an academic but there was never any question of me following on that route. I’m thick.

Ioan Gruffudd

ig_collar

Isn’t he looking sophisticated in this pic?  Ioan starred in Amazing Grace, and had a bit part (as Tony Blair) in Oliver Stone’s W.  He’s done TV, historical stuff, action- you name it!  An interesting fact about Ioan is that his first language was Welsh; he’s a bilingual, multicultural guy.

ig_hh

You don’t need blue eyes to be a hottie- warm brown ones can work, too.  Did you know Ioan starred on a TV show (Horatio Hornblower) a few years back?  It’s now sold in the US.  You may have seen him in Wilde opposite Stephen Fry; he had gorgeous long hair then!

ig_leather

I’m looking forward to seeing one of his (older) films- Solomon and Gaenor.  It’s a youthful love story between a Jewish boy and a Catholic girl in Ireland.

Jimmy Smits

jimmy-smits_people-mag

Where else can you find cheekbones like that!?  His height and striking looks (his heritage is Puerto Rican) make him a major presence onscreen.  Jimmy Smits has been making his mark since the late 1980s, when he was cast on LA Law.  Too bad he didn’t take the offer to star in CSI: Miami.  (I’d rather watch him than David Caruso ANY day!)  He grew up in one of the toughest neighborhoods of Brooklyn (Bushwick), and can be seen in ads for the charity NY Cares.

jimmy-smits_tww3

Here is a pic from The West Wing, where Jimmy played Matt Santos, a serious, sympathetic democratic presidential candidate w/ a young fam.  Hmmm… sounds familiar.

jimmy-smits_obama3

Sometimes art imitates life!  Like our future prez, Jimmy is someone who transcends race.  He’s played Latino characters (from many backgrounds), but also characters that weren’t race-specific.

Toby Stephens

ts_longhair

I like this longer hair A LOT!  Toby is possibly the hottest Bond villain (aside from fellow Brit Sean Bean.)   Speaking of Sean Bean…  He and Sean acted in Sharpe’s Challenge (shot in Rajasthan, India).   Speaking of India…  He’s acted in English AND Hindi (alongside Aamir Khan in The Rising).

ts_mombro

Like mom, Dame Maggie Smith (above w/ bro),  Toby has an unmistakeable (posh) accent, confidant gait, large expressive eyes, and a wide smile.

ts_tenant

In The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Toby plays a kind country farmer who falls for his new neighbor, and becomes a father figure to her little son.   This character is VERY sweet and gentlemanly!

ts_hamletts_mrr1

Toby took on the challenge of Mr. Rochester- a very “changeable” romantic hero who’s “larger than life.”  Now he has MANY more fans!
