What I watched FRI & SAT:

Dr. Who

The 10th Dr. Who is theatrically trained actor David Tennant; he is joined in Season 3 by young medical doc Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman- an unusually pretty actress of Iranian/Ghanian descent).  I saw 3 eps from Season 3 on Sci Fi this afternoon: The Family of Blood (Part I & II) and Blink.  I heard this show was good before on a few websites while browsing around.  Now, I don’t know about the old Dr. Who series, but have heard a little from my parents.  This newer series (begun in 2005) seems VERY interesting!

The red poppies commemorate WWII (in the UK).

The special effects a good (I think those are done in Canada), as well as the acting (David Tennant has VERY expressive eyes and wide range).  If you liked Quantum Leap or any of the Star Trek shows, this may be worth a look.

A desi “American Idol”… and more!!!

This guy just made me smile!

Anoop is the anti-Sanjaya... Thank goodness!!!
I started to watch AI after a LOOOONG time b/c my aunt pointed Anoop out to me 2 wks ago.  (She has 2 young daughters, so she tries to check out what they like when she can.)  I’m REALLY excited that there could be a (good) desi idol in the near future!  As for Sanjaya Malakar- he has a book out now!  I did a double-take when I saw it recently at Borders.
Awww... I LOVE a big smile!
Awww... I LOVE a big smile!

Like many desis, Anoop is a multi-talented, but humble individual.  He’s  22, graduated w/ BA from UNC Chapel Hill (he won a scholarship), and is currently enrolled there in a master’s program in Anthropology.  He likes R&B music the best, and feels part of Southern culture (he referred to himself as “a Carolina boy”).

Yes, Anoop is a TALL desi guy!

In this week’s ep, Randy Travis was (noticebly) impressed w/ Noop Dogg.  Though Anoop admitted to not knowing much re: country music, he did VERY well.  He sang Willie Nelson’s classic song.

Anoop was in an acapella group at his uni; he was usually the soloist of the group (The Clef Tones).  You can check out some old vids of the grp on You Tube.

I think she has a GREAT chance of winning the competition!  Great voice (w/ power), sweet/humble personality, and “girl-next-door” looks ALL go in her favor.

This guy seems very confidant and sweet.  He’s from suburban Michigan, and has a cool, husky kind of voice.

Matt, who also plays piano, released CDs (independantly) before!

Quick Movie Reviews:

burt-gina-tony

I had to be careful where I went because I was a Jew, because I was young and because I was handsome. It made me wiry and erratic and paranoid, which is what I still am. Always on guard.  Tony Curtis

Trapeze (1956)

Two gorgeous guys in tights- what’s not to like?  This film stars Burt Lancaster (gymnastics kept him off the streets as a kid) and Tony Curtis (who didn’t have the required skills at first, but was very enthusiastic).  Curtis’ willingness to learn impressed Lancaster very much.  The two men did most of their own stunts in this film- wow!

This classic pic is set in Paris, and focuses on the working relationship and friendship btwn an older, injured former trapeze star Mike Ribble (Lancaster) and his energetic, young protege Tino Orsini (Curtis).  Tino came all the way from NYC to learn a difficult/dangerous trick on the trapeze (that only Mike can teach him).  But an ambitious/manipulative  young woman, Lola, also in the circus, has her eyes on Tino.

sweet2

Tony Curtis has always been an actor who has refused to play it safe, and has devoted his working life to performing in a vast array of characters… Yet what stands out about all his performances in the inner vulnerability and humility he finds in his unsympathetic characters and the never-say-die attitude of the heroes he plays.  -IMDB bio

Life is to be lived within the limits of your knowledge and within the concept of what you would like to see yourself to be.  –Burt Lancaster

Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

Another pic w/ Lancaster & Curtis, BUT there are few nice guys here!  J.J. Hunsecker (Lancaster) is a powerful, much-feared gossip columnist.  He doesn’t feel guilty about ruining careers, marraiges, and his sensitive little sister’s budding romance.  (You can see the blemishes on Lancaster’s skin in this film; that suits the flawed character he plays.)  Sidney Falco (Curtis) is his ruthlessly ambitious publicist.  Friends worry that working w/ J.J. has corrupted Sid.  Just how far will Sid go to get a taste of success?

A Soldier’s Story (1984)

This is a very thought-provoking ensemble fim based on a successful Broadway play; a young Denzel Washington playing a key role here.  It’s set in a Southern army camp during WWII; soldiers were segregated by race at that time.  They spent a lot of time playing baseball (many hailed from the Negro Leangue), waiting for a chance to fight.  The recruits may have clashing personalities, but they share a hatred of their drill instructor, Sgt. Waters (Adolph Caesar).

soldiers_l

Though Waters is black, too, he is very hard on his men.  His moods go up, down, and every which way.  Waters is not hesitant to use the “n” word to refer to those men he sits as “bad for the race.”  Waters takes no excuses from anyone, so no recruit is too upset when he meets w/ a mysterious death.  The white officers are worried, however, and call for assistance from Washington.

howard

Washington sends down Capt. Davenport (Howard Rollins from the TV series In the Heat of the Night); he’s a black officer/lawyer.  It’s not an easy case- Davenport quickly discovers.  The rag-tag group of recruits do a double take when they see an articulate/strong black officer, and the white officers fear that Davenport is the wrong man for the job.  “Folks around here won’t talk to you!” an older white officer exclaims.  But Davenport remains calm and professional, determined to find the truth.

Did You Know?:

– Burt Lancaster turned down the lead in Ben Hur (and the $1 million salary) b/c he thought it would be awful.  He set up his own production company (rare for an actor of his time) to do his own projects.

– Both Lancaster and Tony Curtis are native New Yorkers.  Who can mistake Curtis’ strong Bronx accent?

– Lancaster admitted to being nervous when working w/ Montgomert Clift in From Here to Eternity:

The only time I was ever really afraid as an actor was that first scene with Clift. It was my scene, understand: I was the sergeant, I gave the orders, he was just a private under me. Well, when we started, I couldn’t stop my knees from shaking. I thought they might have to stop because my trembling would show. I was afraid he was going to blow me right off the screen.

It’s alright to be an American Idol drop-out…

I stopped watching AI a LOOOONG time ago, so I didn’t know about country singer Bucky Covington, a finalist (8th place) from Season 5!  Browsing on iTunes, I’m getting to know a little bit about some REALLY good new country singers.  Bucky (I find the name a bit humorous) now has his first CD out and two music videos on CMT.  And just like Alan Jackson, he’s got the slightly long, light blonde hair and mustache.

On an early 2007 Larry King interview, Bucky said that he still “loves” AI, but considers some of it “comedy” (like the success of William Hung).  Three cheers to Bucky for surviving the (very weird for small town NC guy, no doubt) AI experience and coming out with positive attitude and of course- success!  Mark Miller (from the band Sawyer Brown, and a great stage performer) has a young son who LOVED Bucky on AI, and was mad that he got voted off… so he asked his dad to call him up.  That’s how the record deal happened- cool!

That was then…

My Favorite (Not-So-Famous) Singers

My sister asked me a while back if I STILL listen to country music (like I did as a teen).  Well, why the heck not!?  To me, it’s the BEST kind of music out there (esp. the ’80s and ’90s).  I wince when I see the music vids (on CMT) a LOTTA ppl are doing these days, BUT they are usu not PURE country singers.  They think outlandish hats, tight clothes, and over-the-top cleavage can draw attention from the fact that you have no talent- LOL!  What I mean by that is, they do NOT have clear voices, natural gifts, and simple songs that the greats in the country music world have.  These singers are timeless: Reba, George Strait, Randy Travis, and my first musical obsession- Alan Jackson.  Their names and music will live on for a LONG time to come…

There are 3 (not-so-famous) singers that I esp. liked growing up: John Berry, Paul Brandt, and Neal McCoy.  It boggles my mind why they don’t have billions, but they are UNDENIABLY talented!

John Berry

jberry_jberry.jpg

John Berry, born in SC and raised in Atlanta, has a voice quite unlike most country singers b/c it has a DISTINCT gospel edge to it.  His mother was a big fan of gospel and soul.  He also writes a lot of his own stuff, and records his work independently (therefore giving him creative freedom that ALL artists want).  When I listen to a John Berry song, it comes across as very pure, honest, and emotional.  He is a “low key” personality, but has GREAT range to his voice- just listen and judge!

This song showcases his range:

Standing On The Edge Of Goodbye

This is his most famous song; it was ranked in the top 10 in it’s day:

Your Love Amazes Me

Paul Brandt

668304_356x237.jpg

Can a skinny, baby-faced guy from Canada be a BIG country talent?  Totally, yes!  Paul Brandt, a former pediatric nurse from our northen nabe, is a singer/songwriter based in Alberta.  As you may know, country has always been king in Canada.  The range in his voice is great- he does a variety of songs effortlessly.  His first 2 albums are hands-down FANTASTIC!

A Little In Love (great up-tempo song w/ fun wordplay):

I Do (popular “modern” country classic):

Neal McCoy

c7334221moh.jpg

Neal McCoy is from small-town Texas, but w/ an Irish (father) and Filipino (mother); his real last name is McGoyne.  He is known as a great performer onstage- big grin, loves dancing, and relating well to audiences.  He was influenced as a kid by Charley Pride (a V famous African-American country singer from the ’60s and ’70s).  Neal has a great knack for choosing songs which suit his voice and (outgoing) personality.

If I Was a Drinkin’ Man (soundcheck):

On of my fave songs (of all time)- his first #1 song:

No Doubt About It (LIVE):
