Movie Review: “The Producers”

This 2005 colorful movie musical stars Broadway/film actors Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.  The lyrics to the songs (by the hilarious Mel Brooks) are terrific; I got the CD pf the play several years ago.  They are joined by traffic-stopping beauty Uma Thurman, who wears some of the most beautiful dresses I’ve seen recently onscreen.  Oh, and she sings as well!

Sleazy Broadway producer, Max Bialystock (Lane with a purposefully bad hairdo), is very depressed after his recent play (Funny Boy, a comedy version of Hamlet) closes on Broadway.

After a bad review, Max explains himself in a song; below are some lines (that I REALLY liked):

I am Max Bialystock!
The first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter!
CHORUS:
Once he was the king…
MAX:
You’ve heard of Theatre in the Round?
You’re looking at the man who invented Theatre in the Square!
Nobody had a good seat!

Max gets his books examined by shy accountant Leo Bloom (Broderick- looking boyish as always).  Thinking out loud, Leo comments that one could make more money with a flop than with a hit.  Max is overjoyed!  He even asks the neurotic Leo to join him- become a producer.  Leo confesses that being a Broadway producer has been his “secret dream.”

Max and Leo find a play that is sure to offend people of all backgrounds- Springtime for Hitler by Franz Liebkind (Ferrell), an exciteable German ex-soldier who raises pigeons on his rooftop.  Oh, he also adores the Fuhrer!

Ulla, a bubbly Swede, comes in to audition for a role.  Max and Leo’s eyes nearly pop out of their heads as they watch her sing and dance.  “If you got it, flaunt it!” Ulla belts out (see above pic); this was coined first by Mel Brooks.  That Ethan Hawke is one clueless shlub for letting Uma go!

Next, Max and Leo seek out Broadway’s worst director, Roger De Bris (Beach, a great Broadway actor/singer).  Yes, he is wearing an evening gown resembling the Empire State Building!  His very gay team (personal assistant Carmen, choreographer, costume designer, etc.) all live with him in a VERY feminine mansion (actually a private school on the Upper East Side).

How can you NOT love lyrics like this!?:

ROGER & CARMEN:
A happy ending will pep up your play…
ROGER:
Oedipus won’t bomb…
CARMEN:
If he winds up with Mom!
Keep it gay!
ROGER:
Keep it gay…

By “gay” Mel Brooks meant “happy/light/breezy” BUT it takes on a different connotation when sung by a big guy in a dress.  LOL!!!

Violinists love to play an E-string
But audiences really love a G-string

Ven I was yust a little girl in Sveden
My thoughtful mother gave me this advice
If nature blesses you from top to bottom
Show that top to bottom, don’t think twice

Who are those little old ladies?  They’re lonely, rich, and Max’s “backers” (who he puts “on their backs”).  You get the picture!  These ladies are all Broadway actresses who are great comics, dancers, singers, etc.

Max explains the relationship in a song:

They’re my angels
I’m their devil
And I keep those embers aglow
When I woos ’em
I can’t lose ’em
‘Cause I cast my spell ‘n’
They start yellin’
Fire down below!

How can you NOT laugh?

Check out this movie because you’ll see:

1) Great interplay/physical comedy/timing from BOTH Lane and Broderick

2) An AWESOME dance (waltz) number with Broderick and Thurman

3) Lots of cool NYC locations

4) Terrific sets, costumes, song, and (especially) dance

5) Beautiful girls wearing nothing but pearls (actually intricate bodysuits with pearls created especially for the dancers) in a BIG dance sequence reminiscent of old Hollywood

Why English translations of Bollywood songs ruin the fun

Bollywood should be consumed in VERY small doses IMHO.  Otherwise, one risks becoming angry, irritated, etc. with it’s vacuous portrayals of women, recycled plotlines, and banal dialogue.  A FEW films rise above the junk, to be fair to the industry.  The more Bolly movies I see, the more I understand.  It’s cool, BUT sometimes the songs (esp. when translated) are… cheesy.  Okay, VERY cheesy!

Do YOU like cheese?  Then read on (for some good laughs)!

A still from Devdas; my mom’s impression: “Oof, that movie hurts my eyes!” (It’s VERY bright, colorful, and melodramatic.)

“A thousand Romeos have been made crazy for love of me.” -Soniye Mil Jaa (Aaja Nachle)

This is my FAVE line from a Bolly song, ever!  Not many ladies can say this-  Elizabeth Taylor maybe?

“You’re reaching the stars of my heart.  You tell me, after meeting you, why wouldn’t someone lose their life and love to you?” –Tauba Tumhaare Yeh Ishaare (Chalte Chalte)

What the heck are the stars of someone’s heart!?

“Your heart says beat, beat; my bangles say jingle, jingle.  My god, my god, love has made me helpless.” –Tu Mere Samne (Chori Chori)

This is one of my fave Bolly songs; the movie resembles While You Were Sleeping.

“Look at this crazy girl- she is ignorant of this world.  A gust of wind will come, and with it- her lover.” –Silsila Yeh Chaahat Ka (Devdas)

Yup, that’s how my fam says about me!  LOL!

“You are the flower of his arms.  I am just the dust of his footsteps.” -Dola Re Dola (Devdas)

Chandramukhi (th courtesan in love w/ Devdas) sings this to Parbati (the virgin in love with Devdas); it sounds SAD here in English.  See, you can get affected by this stuff!

“Even if a mirror pays you compliments, my heart says I should break it.” –Tune Zindagi Mein (Humraaz)

This movie is about jealousy; the last half hour is EXACTLY like A Perfect Murder.

“My bracelets say, my bangles say I have become yours, my lover.  Without you in my life, I will die.” –Bole Chudiyan (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham)

Another one of my fave Hindi songs; this movie is HUGE and all-encompassing (of themes) in typical Bolly movies.  The songs in it are REALLY good!

“The sun dims into twilight; the moon beams shimmer brightly.  I stand still as the earth moves around me.” –Suraj Hua Maddham (K3G)

This isn’t SO bad- it’s romantic.

“Very troublesome, buddy, very troublesome- a fair, fair face with a dark, dark mole.”  -Badi Mushkil (Lajja)

Yes, I was nearly ROFLMAO when I realized what it meant!!!

Poster for Lajja, a movie that tried to show feminist sensibility, BUT failed miserably!

It’s alright to be an American Idol drop-out…

I stopped watching AI a LOOOONG time ago, so I didn’t know about country singer Bucky Covington, a finalist (8th place) from Season 5!  Browsing on iTunes, I’m getting to know a little bit about some REALLY good new country singers.  Bucky (I find the name a bit humorous) now has his first CD out and two music videos on CMT.  And just like Alan Jackson, he’s got the slightly long, light blonde hair and mustache.

On an early 2007 Larry King interview, Bucky said that he still “loves” AI, but considers some of it “comedy” (like the success of William Hung).  Three cheers to Bucky for surviving the (very weird for small town NC guy, no doubt) AI experience and coming out with positive attitude and of course- success!  Mark Miller (from the band Sawyer Brown, and a great stage performer) has a young son who LOVED Bucky on AI, and was mad that he got voted off… so he asked his dad to call him up.  That’s how the record deal happened- cool!

That was then…

Unlikely Queens of Country

Okay, I’ve written a bit about the MEN of country music, but there are quite a few talented singers/writers/performers who are WOMEN!  Reba, as we all know, is a star known ALL over the world (music/film/TV), as are Shania Twain and Faith Hill.  I saw Faith WAAAAY back in 1993 when she was touring w/ Alan Jackson!  She had her big, long wavy hair and wore black, elegant dresses back then.  Now on to two other GREAT voices (and luckily- beauties) in country…

Lorrie Morgan

lorrie-cd.jpg

Confident, glamorous, and more talented AND beautiful than BOTH Shania and Faith, Lorrie Morgan has deep, rich, powerful vocals.  She was truly a classy, feminine star in ’90s country- someone who was powerful AND vulnerable at the same time.  Even my “I’m not into country music” lil sis said she was cool!  Her image- clothes, hair, demeanor didn’t scream out “Hey, country singer here!”so she appealed to the masses (ppl who were NOT always country fans).  No padded/sequined gowns or big hair needed to accentuate her talent.

It’s TOO bad that Lorrie is known to most ppl b/c of her relationships w/ various “high profile” men (like Troy Aikmen and former congressman from TN, Fred Thompson).  Wow, she could’ve had a shot at being First Lady (the hottest one) if that had lasted!

Tanya Tucker

tanya-cd.jpg

Wow, it’s so weird to relaize that this GORGEOUS singer will turn 50 this year!  She is one of my dad’s faves, and has been a success for a LONG time- a rare kid singer who grew more popular with age.  Though born in TX, she spent most of her formative years in AZ (like me!)  Her parents nurtured her talent; several of her songs are about the importance of a solid marriage and close family life.

Tanya’s smoky voice is truly the “voice of experience” in country music.  She combines country and rock, but maintains a balance (enabling her to reach ppl who may not be HUGE fans of “traditional” country).  She has her own label nowadays, and will release new stuff later this year!

My Favorite (Not-So-Famous) Singers

My sister asked me a while back if I STILL listen to country music (like I did as a teen).  Well, why the heck not!?  To me, it’s the BEST kind of music out there (esp. the ’80s and ’90s).  I wince when I see the music vids (on CMT) a LOTTA ppl are doing these days, BUT they are usu not PURE country singers.  They think outlandish hats, tight clothes, and over-the-top cleavage can draw attention from the fact that you have no talent- LOL!  What I mean by that is, they do NOT have clear voices, natural gifts, and simple songs that the greats in the country music world have.  These singers are timeless: Reba, George Strait, Randy Travis, and my first musical obsession- Alan Jackson.  Their names and music will live on for a LONG time to come…

There are 3 (not-so-famous) singers that I esp. liked growing up: John Berry, Paul Brandt, and Neal McCoy.  It boggles my mind why they don’t have billions, but they are UNDENIABLY talented!

John Berry

jberry_jberry.jpg

John Berry, born in SC and raised in Atlanta, has a voice quite unlike most country singers b/c it has a DISTINCT gospel edge to it.  His mother was a big fan of gospel and soul.  He also writes a lot of his own stuff, and records his work independently (therefore giving him creative freedom that ALL artists want).  When I listen to a John Berry song, it comes across as very pure, honest, and emotional.  He is a “low key” personality, but has GREAT range to his voice- just listen and judge!

This song showcases his range:

Standing On The Edge Of Goodbye

This is his most famous song; it was ranked in the top 10 in it’s day:

Your Love Amazes Me

Paul Brandt

Can a skinny, baby-faced guy from Canada be a BIG country talent?  Totally, yes!  Paul Brandt, a former pediatric nurse from our northen nabe, is a singer/songwriter based in Alberta.  As you may know, country has always been king in Canada.  The range in his voice is great- he does a variety of songs effortlessly.  His first 2 albums are hands-down FANTASTIC!

A Little In Love (great up-tempo song w/ fun wordplay):

I Do (popular “modern” country classic):

Neal McCoy

c7334221moh.jpg

Neal McCoy is from small-town Texas, but w/ an Irish (father) and Filipino (mother); his real last name is McGoyne.  He is known as a great performer onstage- big grin, loves dancing, and relating well to audiences.  He was influenced as a kid by Charley Pride (a V famous African-American country singer from the ’60s and ’70s).  Neal has a great knack for choosing songs which suit his voice and (outgoing) personality.

If I Was a Drinkin’ Man (soundcheck):

On of my fave songs (of all time)- his first #1 song:

No Doubt About It (LIVE):

Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye  (official music vid):

They’re Playing Our Song (official music vid):

Wink (Opry performance):
