Gorgeous voices… and faces

Jack Ingram

ji_guitar

He’s SO cool, and I (seriously) think I might be in LOVE with Jack Ingram!  I’ve been listening to several of his songs these past 3 weeks, and I’m NOT getting tired of them.  Jack’s sound is country-rock, as in raspy and rebellious, but it’s NOT over-the-top.  This experienced singer/guitarist has many devoted fans in Texas, where he began his career in 1992.  Jack (now 39) finally reached Top 40 country charts in 2005.

David Nail

dn1_closeup

This Missouri-born/raised country singer’s songs are deeply personal.  David Nail, who writes about his own particular failures and hopes, is an outside-the-box singer who will appeal to those who don’t usually listen to country.  His sound is somewhat melancholy and introspective; one of David’s influences is Vince Gill.

I know what you think, here we go again
The same waste of potential that I’ve always been
I’ve been given chances and I’ve burned some bridges up
Had a million excuses why I’d self-destruct

But this time around
I’m a little more ready now
I’m a little bit older, a little more figured out
This time around
This Time Around

This is David’s second chance in Nashville; in 2002, his debut album was NOT released by Mecury.  He took a break to coach baseball, but kept on writing songs, waiting for another try.

In every frame
Upon our wall
Lies a face
That’ts seen it all
Through ups and downs
And then more downs
We helped each other
Off of the ground
No one knows
What we’ve
Been through
Making it
Ain’t making it
Without you

Danielle Peck

dp_glam

I just heard about this NC-born singer recently.  Danielle (31) was raised in Ohio by a Marine family w/ musical talents.  She formed her own band after high school, worked as a waitress in Nashville, and wrote songs for fellow country singers before making it big herself.  Danielle’s voice is big and brassy, a bit like that of Terri Clark.

Mica Roberts

I’ve only heard a few of her songs, BUT Mica Roberts’ voice is quite impressive and unique among the big sea of country women you hear these days.  You MUST check out her song w/ Toby!

Josh Turner

This voice will melt butter, no doubt about it!  Josh Turner’s gorgeous baritone, not to mention his unassuming smile, will remind you of Randy Travis (with whom he’s performed before).  Randy has said that he’s “a big fan” of Josh.  Wow, now that’s an honor!

Merchant Ivory’s final film… & more!

Movie Review: Before the Rains (2007)

BtR_dvd

Tagline: Passion has its price.

My mom saw this movie last month… and LOVED it!  This is the last film produced by both James Ivory (deceased) and Ismail Merchant (his business/life partner).  It is hands-down one of the most (visually) stunning movies out there!  The director, Santosh Sivan, is also a highly respected cinematographer in his native India.  The only other movie that compares (with regard to beauty) is Alfonso Arau’s A Walk in the Clouds.  The natural beauty of southrn India, top actors of Tamil cinema, and the authentic music add flavor to an interesting central story.

TK (Rahul Bose) and Moores (Linus Roache)
TK (Rahul Bose) & Moores (Linus Roache)

British gentleman/planter/family man Henry Moores (Linus Roache, who can currently be seen on Law & Order) has started an ambitious road expansion project in a small village within Kerala in southern India.  He has requested extra funds from the bank, and hopes that the road will hold (after the monsoons).  Moores, a well-liked and generous white man, is aided by his native land manager/”right hand man” TK Neelan (Rahul Bose, one of India’s finest indie actors).   TK is the most interesting person in the film, a bridge between his home village and the British rulers.  Though TK works for Moores, they have a close, friendly relationship. (TK is surprised/delighted when Moores presents him with an English pistol.)

Kerala is a character in the film, too!
Kerala is a character in the film, too!

There are rumors in the village about a couple seen in the woods.  TK realizes that Moores is (dangerously) close to his beautiful/strong-willed housekeeper Sajani (Nandita Das, star of Deepa Mehta’s Earth and Fire; one of India’s finest indie actresses).  Is it love?  Is it mutual?

Sajani (Nandita Das) w/ Laura Moores (Jennifer Ehle) and son
The Moores' housekeeper Sajani (Nandita Das) tells Laura Moores (Jennifer Ehle) and son a story.

Like Moores, Sajani is married, and a friend of TK’s (since childhood).  But Laura Moores (Jennifer Ehle of Pride and Prejudice fame; an American actress who studied in Britain) doesn’t suspect anything when she returns from London with their young son.  The Moores’ son adores TK and Sajani and is enthralled by their stories.

All smiles at a screening
All smiles on 2 of my fave actors!

TK is VERY engaging, though his face shows subtle expressions and he speaks simply /honestly.  The role of TK is a departure for Bose, Sivan says on the commentary track, because he usually portrays sophisticated/urbane characters (as in Mr & Mrs Iyer and 15 Park Avenue).  Roache does a fine job of  keeping the restraint of an Englishman, but his conflicting emotions come out of his eyes.  The Brit comments that though he has visited India several times, he considers Kerala to be “the most beautiful place in the world.”

If That’s Country: VERY funny criticism of  the modern country scene; some lyrics below…

You can make a star of a teenage girl
But one million dollars won’t make her Merle
Laser beams, navel rings, and a pretty face might be something

But you can kiss my Ozark ass, if that’s country

Now I ain’t denyin’ them suburban moms their fun

But don’t you try to tell me it’s the way Hank wanted it done
You  better keep your money-grubbin’ hands off the poor man’s song

And make sure Chris Gaines stays the hell offa my front lawn

Goodbye Lil and Anoop!!!

Hey readers (esp. Idol fans):
Are you UPSET about this!?  I certainly am!  This shows us (once again) that natural ability doesn’t ALWAYS make you a winner.  That’s just plain sad.  Matt and Kris would’ve been gone, if it were up to me.  I’m glad that Allison got to stay- she has a LOT of skill w/ her voice.  I hope Adam can win it all- like Randy said, he’s ready NOW for a career.  Go Adam!!!
All the best,
EMMA.

Today’s ep of Ballykissangel:

Father Peter Clifford comforts a churchgoer
Father Peter Clifford (Stephen Tompkinson) listens to Eileen, who's love w/ the new guy in town, Enda Sullivan.

I liked re-watching this ep A LOT b/c I didn’t recall some of it!  It focuses on Brian’s attempt to make a promo film about the town, Peter’s attempt to get more people in for Sunday mass, and Assumpta’s attempt to get a personal life.

Pretty much everyone in the town has noticed that Enda is interested in Assumpta.  She is a BIT curious about the newbie, who is also an ex-rocker/single dad to a young son.  In a recent ep, Enda even played a gig at Fitzgerald’s for free.  Niamh, who is recently married/pregnant, encourages Assumpta to date Enda (if he asks her).  He does ask, but she insists on picking HIM up and pays 50% for dinner.

At dinner, Enda comments that “for an atheist, you’re pretty friendly with the priest.”  Assumpta shoots back quickly, “I’m not an atheist, and the Church doesn’t have anything to do with my friendship with the priest.  Peter’s a good man.”  Enda and Assumpta have an awkward date b/c he’s more interested in her than she is in him.

Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwan) wonders about her date, ex-rocker Enda Sullivan.
Assumpta Fitzgerald (Dervla Kirwan)

After the date, Assumpta urges Enda to talk to his son (who has been acting up recently).  The boy knows that Eileen (his babysitter) cares for his dad, though Enda takes her for granted.  (It’s obvious that he’s involved w/ Eileen, but has a roving eye!)

Assumpta listens while best gal pal (Niamh) gives her advice about men.
Assumpta listens while best gal pal (Niamh) gives her advice about men.

Assumpta tells Niamh that she doesn’t want any more advice about her personal life.  She’s sick and tired of people getting in her business.  (Hey, that’s small town life!)

Peter talks to Enda about performing (hymns) in church.
Peter talks to Enda about performing in church.

Peter goes over to Enda’s house to discuss his coming performance.  But we can tell from Peter’s face and demeanor that he’s MORE concerned about the Assumpta-Enda-Eileen love triangle!

Assumpta breaks off her (would-be) relationship w/ Enda graciously.
Assumpta breaks off her burgeoning relationship w/ Enda.

At the end of this ep, Assumpta graciously breaks off her would-be relationship w/ Enda.  She tells the chagrined older man “maybe you need to grow up.”  Peter comes by the bar and says “you really missed something great” (meaning the performance at mass).  Assumpta looks over at Enda walking away and says “I doubt it” (referring to a  relationship).

I'm cheering for Adam- reality TV CAN be exciting!
I’m cheering for Adam- reality TV CAN be exciting!  Wow…

Tonight’s best performances were: Adam, Anoop, and Danny.  I decided 2 weeks ago that I like Danny a LOT better than Matt.  His voice is more interesting, and his performances are more natural and energetic.  (Dad said “he’s very natural” after Danny sang.)  Adam and Anoop looked TERRIFIC tonight- posh BUT young.  I liked Adam’s song- VERY original!  Anoop looked more grown-up and showed some personality tonight- YAY!  I didn’t know the song he picked, BUT it was pretty good.  Paula is right- Anoop has a great smile.  His parents looked VERY happy (and excited).  ITA w/ Randy that this is the best 7 contestants they’ve had on the show!
