Emma’s Faves of 2015: Film

99 Homes

99-Homes-Poster

99 Homes shouldn’t be described as the typical tour-de-force, but more of a tour-de-fact cinematic achievement.

Holding his own against a larger than life acting force that is Shannon, Garfield’s Nash allows himself to feed off Carver’s greed and sinisterly convincing monologues with scenes of heart-wrench, grit and sensitivity.

-Comments from a viewer from Canada (IMDB)

I saw this film at a pre-screening (w/ my movie Meetup group); I wasn’t expecting it to be this good!  Michael Shannon (who portrays a quite realistic villain) is a shoe-in for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.  (FYI:  Broadgreen acquired the film late in OCT ’14, then tried to squeeze in a release before the end of that year to qualify for the Oscars.  They decided they didn’t have enough time to mount a proper marketing campaign, so it sat on the shelf until OCT ’15.)

Ex Machina

Ex-Machina-Cast-Wallpapers

…if the test is passed, you are dead center of the greatest scientific event in the history of man.  -Nathan

If you’ve created a conscious machine, it’s not the history of man. That’s the history of gods.  -Caleb

Quiet dialogue scenes between two characters are filmed in such an impactful way, making them feel hauntingly austere, sweet and innocent, or terrible and frightening, through meticulous use of composition, light and sound.

The performances are excellent, most notably Alicia Vikander as the beguiling Ava, who absolutely passes for being ‘almost human.’  Domhnall Gleeson also delivers a quiet and focused performance as Caleb. Like Ava, he is relatable… in complete contrast to the boorish, reckless Nathan (Oscar Isaac).

The dialogue feels real and non-cliché. The ending probably will not satisfy everyone…  Overall I found it to be enthralling and disturbing stuff.

-Comments from a viewer in Ireland

This year, I’ve been listening to a few different movie podcasts; ALL of them reviewed and praised this sci-fi film.  I FINALLY saw it 2 weeks ago and was VERY surprised (which is rare these days- stories becoming more and MORE repetitive, cliched, and just plain boring).  Alex Garland, the writer and director, is going to be one to watch in the future (no pun intended).  This is more like a 3-person play, as one critic noted, NOT a typical sci-fi film.  Even the music is out-of-the box!  You can watch it on Netflix; don’t forget to recommend to your friends who don’t usually go in for sci-fi (they’ll thank you later).

Do y’all remember when I FIRST wrote re: Issac?

Inside Out

When I was asked to do this, the script was amazing. I went up to Pixar and I cried. I was just in a meeting with these guys and they showed me the story and I started weeping.  -Mindy Kaling

This is another film I saw at a pre-screening (w/ my movie Meetup group): I went in knowing almost nothing about it, aside from the fact that Kaling, Amy Poehler, and Louis Black were playing some of the voices.  It ALSO turned out to be a pleasant surprise (Bing Bong was one of my faves)!  The crowd was moved throughout the animated film; we were almost ALL grown-ups from 20s-50s.  You can see this film w/ the entire family- each person will get something different out of it!

Brooklyn

I went to see this film w/ my mom- we BOTH loved it!  And can you believe that Saoirse Ronan is ONLY in her early 20s!?  Emory Cohen (who I’d never seen before) does a FINE job as Tony; I think he was channeling a young, BUT more low-key version of Brando.  This is another film w/ Domhnall Gleeson- here, he plays Jim, the handsome (check out that darker red hair and preppy wardrobe), well-settled Irish bar owner; this is a far cry from his roles in Ex Machina and the new Star Wars film.

Listen to Me Marlon

A MUST-SEE for fans of classic films!  It has been playing on Showtime for the past 2 wks or so; it will be on WED, 12/30 at 10PM EST.  It kept me glued to my seat past midnight, even though I should’ve been sleeping.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

star-wars-the-force-awakens-poster

By now, you ALL must have seen this movie- maybe some saw it twice!  There were quite a FEW surprises for me, even though I’d (partly) been spoiled by the time I saw it last week.  Gleeson is here again (getting to REALLY like him), as are Isaac (LOVE him already) and Adam Driver (mostly known for his recurring role on HBO’s Girls).  Harrison Ford is onscreen for a good amount of time- my mom and lil bro BOTH liked that.  The two newbie leads (Daisy Ridley and John Boyega) did VERY well; they also had GREAT chemistry.  My mom also liked the new robot (BB-8).  Go check it out if you haven’t yet- you’ll have a GREAT time for sure!

Emma’s Faves of 2015: TV Shows

Daredevil (Netflix)

daredevil_cast
The main cast of Season 1 of “Daredevil” (Netflix): Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosario Dawson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, & Elden Hanson

This show (unlike Jessica Jones- sorry, big fans) has a likeable lead character, blind vigilante/lawyer Matt Murdock (played by the boyish Charlie Cox), a terrific/multi-layered villain- Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), and even some humor (Daredevil’s best bud/law partner, Foggy).  The writing is quite strong, as are the recurring/side characters; I LOVED the flashbacks (esp. Matt’s relationship w/ his struggling/loving boxer father).  One of the unusual (for our time) themes of the show is hero’s relationship w/ his religion (Catholicism, in this case).  I just found that SO refreshing!  As for D’Onofrio, he was the main draw for me (WOW, I was NOT disappointed)!  There are strong/interesting ladies on this show, too, including the nurse (Rosario Dawson) who also appears in Jessica Jones.

Fresh Off the Boat (ABC)

FRESH OFF THE BOAT - ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat" stars Randall Park as Louis Huang, Forrest Wheeler as Emery Huang, Constance Wu as Jessica Huang, Hudson Yang as Eddie Huang and Ian Chen as Evan Huang. (ABC/Bob D'Amico)
ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” stars Randall Park (Louis Huang), Forrest Wheeler (Emery Huang), Constance Wu (Jessica Huang), Hudson Yang (Eddie Huang) and Ian Chen (Evan Huang). (ABC/Bob D’Amico)

You probably know the history behind this (much lauded) show, BUT it’s VERY funny, clever, and (at times) emotional.  I’ve recommended it to MANY folks, esp. to those who are 1st gen growing up in U.S.  (I even got my parents into watching it, though they prefer films.)  There are some jokes that are even MORE funny if you’re from an Asian-American background!  Constance Woo (just aged 29- WOW)  has recently gotten a LOT of positive reviews; they are well-deserved.  With each ep, I see the lead actor (Hudson Yang), getting more stronger, confident, and on point.  He reminds me of a few boys (and even girls) that I knew back in JHS and HS.  The BEST thing about this show (IMO) the solid, loving, cooperative marriage between Jessica and Louis (Randall Park, an actor I always liked).

Master of None (Netflix)

master-of-none-poster
Promo poster for “Master of None” (Netflix)

This comedy series (created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang) is unlike ANYTHING I’ve seen on TV- you NEED to see it now… or VERY soon!  Ravi Patel (Meet the Patels) is a recurring character on the show; he plays an Indian-American actor (just like Dev).  Ansari (just in his early 30s) cleverly brings up themes like typecasting in Hollywood, which even someone of his popularity has been subject to in the past.  The ep focusing on the creators’ parents coming to America stories has been highly recommended by friends, critics, and MANY of you out here online.

The Affair (Showtime)

Season 2 promo photo of “The Affair” (Showtime): Joshua Jackson (Cole), Ruth Wilson (Alison), Dominic West (Noah), & Maura Tierney (Helen)

Hopefully, you were able to see the finale (WOW, it was a surprise) last SUN.  I thought that the show (which features 4 strong co-leading actors in their 30s and 40s) was taking a weird turn, BUT it got back on track quickly!  Let me know- are you #TeamNoah (as I tried to be) or #TeamCole (it’s tough to decide)?  Are you excited about Season 3?

Being Mary Jane: Season 3 (Episodes 1 & 2)

SPOILERS: Don’t read this review if you have not yet seen or don’t want to know details from the BET series Being Mary Jane.

Episode 1: Facing Fears

BMJ-Dial-S3E1
Mary Jane accidentally hears David and Lisa at the end of Season 2.

We see Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union) getting wheeled into the ER after the (cliffhanger) car accident at the end of S2.  The BEST part of the ep comes early when Mary Jane’s dad, Paul Sr. (Richard Roundtree), punches David (Stephen Bishop) in the face (LOVED IT)!  The Pattersons now know that David was cheating w/ Lisa (Latarsha Rose), MJ’s oldest friend and a surrogate daughter to the family.

BMJ-hospital-S3E1
David tries to explain/apologize to the Pattersons in the hospital.

In the cafeteria, Helen (Margaret Avery), pointedly asks Lisa about her relationship w/ David- AWKWARD (yet it comes off VERY well from the viewpoint of her tough-love/straight-forward character.  Remember how Lisa spent time w/ Helen in S1 (watching their fave TV show)?  And also how she cared for Niecy during her two pregnancies?

The woman that collided w/ Mary Jane, Cece (Loretta Devine) is simply a delight (or should I use her term- “blessing?”)   Suffice it to say, Cece is a hustler who will NOT go quietly!  We learn about her smarts in the meeting at SNC, then later at MJ’s house (bold move there).

P.J. (B.J. Britt) comes over to see MJ; they have a GREAT convo re: black men, black women, standards, and David (specifically).  MJ tells him that she wants what their parents have (awww)!  I also LOVED thos scene; P.J. “dropped some truth” (as the commentators on Afterbuzz TV said).

Patrick (Richard Brooks) drives Lisa over- it’s too soon for MJ.  But she goes outside and they have (yet another) difficult convo.  MJ admits that she didn’t want to communicate w/ Lisa b/c that would’ve brought up HER own issues!  They’ve grown apart in the last year, b/c Lisa was jealous of what David (who she’d met first, then been friends w/) and MJ had.

Episode 2: Louie, Louie

This ep is like a “homage to her baseball bat” (Afterbuzz TV).  It also brings up some (serious) questions: Does MJ have a drinking problem?  Is it to the point where she’s an alcoholic?  (Niecy brought it up toward the end of S2.)

Kara (Lisa Vidal) covers up the mirror, then stays overnight in MJ’s hospital room.  (Their alliance/friendship is one of the BEST things about the show!)

BMJ-Cece-S3E2
Cece makes a (surprise) visit to Mary Jane’s house.

The Latino population is growing FAST, as the rep from the The National Council of La Raza tells Greg.  A new/younger gal, Marisol, has been brought in to sub for MJ, which causes MJ to feel pity for herself (yeah, she’s got SOME entitlement issues).

It’s already been brought!  -MJ declares to Cece (This is a callback to Union’s role on the teen comedy Bring It On.)

While Marisol is on, Cece comes by and they have a battle of wit/words.  MJ calls her a “lazy negro”- she wants to extort money from MJ (even after getting $100,000 from SNC).

I LOVED how Patrick asked Paul (finally) for help- his father gets choked up w/ emotion.  When the others leave the room, Niecy (quietly/sadly) asks Patrick why wasn’t he there for her and Naima (her older sister who was engaged to be married in S2).  Niecy just keeps growing on me (I did NOT like her much when I started watching this show).

The Affair: Season 2 (Episode 3)

SPOILERS: Don’t read this review if you have not yet seen or don’t want to know details from the Showtime series The Affair.

Did YOU catch that Cole was wearing a wedding ring when he met w/ Alison (in previous ep)?  A viewer (Charles Harkins) did, then wrote into the Afterbuzz TV  to point that out.  Whoa, good catch there!

Engaged_S2E3_The Affair
Love is NOT all you need, Noah & Alison keep learning!

Though he hid it from Helen, we know that Noah and Alison are living together (6 weeks or so) in the Hudson Valley cabin.  (Whoa, it’s WAY too early to get engaged!)  Noah learns some facts about Alison, including the almost drowning herself in S1 E8.  Several viewers have commented that Alison seems “so down” still; they imagined that she’d be happier; Alison Dean (Afterbuzz TV) replied that we will learn more about Alison in the near future (like more details re: her young son’s death).

Part 1: Noah

Toast_S2E3_The Affair
The issues, conflicts, and awkwardness of the Friedmans MUST be reminding Noah & Alison of difficulties of marriage.

In this version, Alison is the one (after an awkward pause) creates a story of how the couple met at the lunch w/ Robert and Yvonne.  Noah looks  (a bit) surprised by this, but quickly joins in.  Later on, he comments to Alison that “it was a bit unreal.”

Whitney (surprise!) storms into the cabin.  She is majorly pissed-off, cursing loudly, and being nasty to BOTH Noah and Alison.  Then, she spies the engagement ring and blows up!

Alison offers him the ring back, BUT it’s quite different in her version!  Noah think of Alison as someone who is stronger than she looks, so she is (usually) the active (coming on strong) person in the relationship.

Hug_S2E3_The Affair
“I think she’s the most openly sensitive…” -Actress Julia Goldani Telles

Before Whitney leaves on the train, she says that she wants to come live w/ him full-time.  She complains about her mom and grandmother, referring to them as “witches.”  Yes, Whitney is a difficult teen girl, BUT the way she talks and her behavior are NOT so uncommon (in these modern times).

Noah has lunch w/ Max in NYC.  Max gives (few/vague) details about his new relationship (we know it’s Helen).  Then, Max gives him $50,000 (chump change for a guy like him).  Hmmm… what will Noah say when he learns re: Max and Helen?

Part 2: Alison

Yvonne is excited to learn that Noah and Alison are engaged, and she prattles on w/ questions. Noah mentions having 4 kids right away.  Alison is surprised to hear the “I think I’m done” (she wants kids, I’m pretty sure).  Noah notices the sad/disappointed look on her face, then says that they hadn’t discussed it.  Robert is embarrassed by Yvonne’s nosiness, so he takes her glass and pours the white wine out (LOVED this little bit, personally).

Alison_Whitney_S2E3_The Affair
Whitney is a complex kid… she can manipulate her elders well!

Whitney came to the mansion (NOT acting as obnoxious/outraged as in Noah’s version) while Noah and Yvonne were talking re: his new book.  The next morning, she makes coffee and eggs for Alison.  We learn that  her intent is get Scott’s number (“Because I’m in love with him!”)  She and Alison seem to get along.

Do you think we’re making a terrible mistake?  -Alison asks Noah re: their engagement

In her version, Alison is more meek and passive; she asks the above question.  In the background, we see Whitney having a cigarette.  Alison is (obviously) thinking of her (and Noah’s other kids).  Viewers have commented that HE has more to lose than Alison.

Alison and Robert go look for the rogue dog (Pete) and they have a GREAT conversation.  It seemed VERY “real” and “genuine,” as the Afterbuzz TV hosts commented.  I LOVE Robert!
