I HAVE A JOB!!!
Hi readers,
Well, I FINALLY got a job this past week- YAAAY!!! I’m a technical writer w/ a subcontracting firm (focusing on IT) working w/ the federal government. I’m going to find out the specifics on TUES. I’m VERY relieved; I can become a contributing member of society again- LOL! I’m STILL a little upset that I couldn’t do English teaching full-time. Oh well…
Thanks for reading,
EMMA.
Recently watched movies:
Julie and Julia (now playing in theaters)

I saw this movie w/ my mom; she said “I expected more.” The Julia sections are light and bubbly, but the Julie sections just fall flat. Meryl Streep did a nice job, as usual, especially in the few sensitive scenes. The accent was spot on; I know b/c I’ve seen some eps of Cooking w/ Julia Child on PBS. I REALLY enjoyed Stanley Tucci’s sweet/understated performance as Julia’s hubby, Paul. Tucci is one of the finest American character actors working today!

Julie’s hubby (played by Chris Messina) was more interesting than her! He was such a regular (yet VERY cute) and supportive partner! And it’s ALWAYS nice to see NYC in the movies, b/c I still miss it.
Runaway Jury (2003)

Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman) is a liberal New Orleans torts lawyer taking on the gun lobby. Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) is the big/bad/out-of-town jury consultant for the defendant (a gun company), and between them the battle is for the hearts and minds of the jury (a motley crew of New Orleanians). But there is someone on the inside. Nicholas Easter (John Cusack) is a juror with a girlfriend, Marlee (Rachel Weisz), on the outside. They have a past… and their own agenda! -IMDB summary

The premise of this movie is VERY interesting. I REALLY liked the confrontation scene btwn Hoffman and Hackman; it was written in after the crew learned that they’d never shared a scene before! However, they’ve been friends for a LONG time. Weisz did the tough/action scenes VERY convincingly. John Cusack was understated and convincing, as his part needed. (I haven’t seen many of his films, but I LOVE to watch anything w/ his big sis Joan.)
The Guns of Navarone (1961)

It doesn’t make a difference as long as I’m a person in the world.

Recent iTunes downloads:
Down the Road – Kenny Chesney (w/ Mac McAnally)
I just heard this song last week, and it stuck in my mind. This is reminiscent of classic country: timeless, touching, and just 3 mins long. Mac McAnally is a singer/songwriter w/ a very pure/clear voice.
If I Know Me – George Strait
A classic from a classic singer
The Walk – Sawyer Brown
Another timeless song about the stages in a man’s life
Update on me… and more
Hey readers!
The weather is going up and down last few days; it’s pretty windy, and going to rain later today in NoVA. I heard there were some several tornadoes touching down in NJ & NY this past week! Dad is in Bowie, MD looking at houses w/ his realtor today (FRI). He likes the area so far…
I’ve added some new blogs to my blogroll, so check them out. I want to learn more about podcasting, so let me know if you have any expertise on that subject! I listen to a variety of podcasts on iTunes, and thought it would be fun to create my own (perhaps focused on British Literature).
I’m STILL working on my TESOL assignments (so I can be considered for overseas English teaching). I went to a reunion for Tesol Teaching International where I met some VERY interesting people! It was a diverse group- different ages, backgrounds, subject areas, etc. Mom thinks Japan would be a good choice, BUT it’s pricy. As for working in US…
Dad knows an Indian American guy whose company is hiring over 300 new workers, including contractors to work in fed govt. I don’t want to sound negative, BUT I’ve never gotten much (job-related) news/help from desis in places I’ve lived. (Even in NYC, I met only a handful of Bangladeshi teachers in the public school system.) The DC area MAY be different story, b/c there are desis here who work in non-profit sector (which interests me VERY much).
Recently, I met some warm, intelligent, yet laid-back Bangladeshis (at Drishtipat DC). Many of them know my NYC friends. Many of them mentioned networking. I didn’t know networking was SO important until this year! Did you know that you are more likely to get hired through acquaintances, NOT friends?
Thanks for checking out my blog,
EMMA.

The Moth Podcast, 7/20/09: Alex Draper: You are a Great King
A TRUE story of a caterer/struggling actor (Alex Draper) who gets hired by an old college pal (an Indian prince) to co-star in “the Schindler’s List of India” (Kala Pani/Black Water).

John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter:
What Is This Thing called Love?
In The Still Of The Night
You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To
Easy to Love

I’ve mentioned him before on this blog; John Barrowman is a musical theater/TV/movie actor originally from Scotland (but raised in the Midwestern US). You can check him out on De-Lovely (w/ Kevin Kline); in the UK, he stars in the Dr. Who spin-off Torchwood. He’s been in several eps of the 3rd season of Dr. Who (w/ fellow Scot, David Tennant).

Movies you DON’T want to see:

Deception
This movie has Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, BUT it’s SO bad that I turned it off LONG before it ended! The first few mins where you see the (lonely/closed-off life) Ewan’s shy auditor character leads in NYC are done well. Jackman’s charming villain character is TOO much, sorry to say. Michelle Williams to TOO young/immature for her role. It’s NOT a believable story.

The Ice Storm
This movie has a GREAT cast of VERY young (Elijah Wood, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire) and middle-aged actors (Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen, etc.) It’s directed by Ang Lee, and set in the early 1970s in suburban New Canaan, CT. The characters are emotionally cut off from their spouses, kids, and themselves. The film has some nice moments, but seems fragmented and disjointed. It didn’t evoke much of a response from viewers, I’ve read.

Prime
Even though it has Meryl Streep (who plays Uma Thurman’s therapist), her role is thankless, one-note, and WAY beneath her talent. The love interest for Uma is (obviously) an inexpereinced actor! Sorry, I didn’t buy them as falling in love- NO chemistry. The dialogue is just plain DULL.
Sunday on the blog w/ Emma
Hey readers,
Last week was NOT good for me- had A LOT of ups and downs in mood! Of course, I’m still feeling bad re: not having a job. (But there are many ppl in this position, incl those who went to Ivies!) I’m applying for various F/T jobs and signing up w/ online tutoring agencies (for this summer).
My 1st priority is to complete my TESOL training assignments b/c I may go to China in September. (I didn’t want to go in August- what if I end up getting a English teaching job here? Hey, ya never know!) Yesterday, at the Starbucks in Old Town Alexandria, I saw a guy around my age studying books on Chinese verbs and grammar. Maybe he needs it for business or wants to teach abroad, too?
On the positive side… I can’t believe that I bought a swimsuit after MANY years! (The apt community where Dad and I live, there are several nice/newish pools. We had our own pool in our Tucson house, and I’ve missed swimming these past 10 yrs.) I got the Women’s Original Sport Tankini in black from Land’s End; this company sells conservative swimsuits. (It looks like a jogging outfit of tank top and shorts basically.) Land’s End has swim skirts and different colorful items, too. An Iranian-American lady I know has a “burkini” swimsuit w/o the head covering; it looks like a wetsuit, I believe. I think it’s GREAT to have more choices in swimwear these days!
It’s summer- the season for LOTS of weddings! A terrific Broadway, film, and TV actor (Harry Lennix) got married last week. Though he’s not a well-known actor, he does a GREAT job w/ his roles.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0502015/
You can see his Shakesperean talent in Titus and his stereotype-busting gay intellectual in Spike Lee’s Get on the Bus. Plus he used to be a teacher in Chicago, his hometown. That’s cool!
Here is the announcement in the NYT weddings section:

Here are some of my recent iTunes downloads:
Already Gone – Sugarland
This duo just keeps getting better and better; they recently appeared on Oprah!
Anything Goes; How Many Times – Randy Houser
This singer began his career as a songwriter; recently he co-wrote Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” w/ Jamey Johnson (see below). Letterman had Randy on his show to sing Anything Goes after being impressed w/ it from radio! His voice is PURE country- not like the pop type of country we’ve grown so used to hearning since the ’90s. His voice is a beautiful standout amidst the crowd of new country acts!
Give It Away – George Strait
George is STILL ruggedly handsome and putting out hit after hit!
I Run To You; Lookin’ for a Good Time – Lady Antebellum
A young/new/cute trio has GORGEOUS voices you must-hear!

Redneck Side of Me; That Lonesome Song – Jamey Johnson
The big/burly singer is a former Marine; he has written songs for George Strait, Joe Nichols, Trace Adkins, etc. His voice is VERY masculine and old-school country!
Whatever It Is – Zac Brown Band
I just heard about this grp a few weeks ago- boy, am I behind the times! They have an original sound. So glad that I have CMT (after a LONG time).

A mosque in a gram (small village) near Chittagong

A baby taxi (runs on natural gas)

We saw these guys selling roadside snacks on the way to Cox’s Bazaar; the little boy completed 4th grade, but didn’t advance on (b/c he didn’t want to attend a madrassa school, where no practical skills are learned).

This young guy goes arounding seeking visitors who want a pony ride in Cox’s Bazaar (beach/vacation town).

After the storm…

This house belongs to one of my mom’s aunts.

Isn’t this a NICE view?!
