Update on the job front

Hey all!

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated you on my life (aside from movies).  Things are not going as I’d like- I was laid off exactly one month ago after nearly 3 yrs on a project.  I haven’t had any work due or any meetings w/ my 2 (fed) clients since mid-June.  The contract my team was under (w/ FMCSA, an agency under DOT)  finished at the end of July.   The team I worked w/ is smaller by 3 people; 2 of them (developers) found other jobs pretty quickly.  I’m not sure re: the one of the ladies who worked on graphics/web content; I hope she has a job, too.

Now, all of this was a shock, but too much.  I knew since January re: end of the contract, but not the nitty gritty details.  It took some time before I learned the real deal- my project was given to another contracting company!  So, what to do now?  Look for jobs!, of course!  October is the start of the fed fiscal year, so maybe I can get back on my old project then; I would have to be hired my the (bigger) company.  I have some savings, and think I can get by on DC unemployment, but it’s not very generous (only $359/wk).  Maryland (where I live) gives more, but I can’t claim that, since I worked in DC.  Some other states give more than $500 /wk in benefits!

My mom (who still lives back in Indy) is the one who motivates me to not get too upset about this situation.  She has gone through a lot in the last 10 months, and come out as a survivor.  She never makes a bid deal/fuss of herself, but gets through life w/ a positive outlook!  And there is more to come…

Thanks for reading (and check back again),

Shoes for Summer

Why NOT look cute while around the house/neighborhood?  These cheetah-inspired sandals were only $10 from Old Navy.

I got these from an Aerosoles in Astoria, Queens (while on my recent NYC trip).  They weren’t on sale (newer style), but I LOVE these shoes!!!  They’re incredibly comfy; you won’t  want to take them off!

These braided sandals (less than $20) are from a sale at NY & Co. about 2 months back.  I’ve received a few compliments on these, and they are comfy as well!

These sandals are from Payless, but they are quite comfy (I wore them twice).  I got them on a BOGO 1/2 off sale 3 weeks back.

I’ve had these sandals since last Fall, but haven’t worn them much.  I LOVE  this shade of blue!

These were $20 from The Loft (otherwise known as my weekly hangout- LOL)!  I bought them a few months ago.  I’ve worn them three times and gotten compliments.  They are comfy, too!

Get Dressed for Summer

I bought this dress from Marshalls recently; this style suits my body type and I don’t have many clothes in shades of red.

I got this dress in March during a clearance sale at New York & Company (which has a branch in downtown Silver Spring).  There is also a big store at Westfield Shopping Plaza (better known as Wheaton Mall).  Usually, the dresses at NY & Co. are better suited to taller women, but this fit me well (a pleasant surprise)!

Another find from NY & Co. during a more recent sale; this was the only one left.  This is my favorite color!  This style of dress will look good on a many different body types.

This is an unusually cute shrug/sweater from Marshalls.  I love the designs!  I think this will look good over a tank (beige, white, etc.), skinny jeans, and sandals.

Here is a pleated floral skirt from The Loft.  Yes, I refer to myself as a Loft junkie (for about one year now)- LOL!  There are SO many locations, sales, and quality products.

I got this casual shirt last fall from Zara (Spanish clothing store; Metro Center area) mainly because I loved the colors and floral pattern.

Another great skirt from The Loft- I’ve started to wear more skirts and dresses in the past year.

A cotton, casual (yet flattering) dress from NY & Co.  It’s longer on the sides; it’ll fit petite sizes (I’m only 5’2″).  You can wear it alone or with a shrug (like I do).  Be prepared for lots of compliments!
